Reliance Jio turns one: From a disruptive 4G telecom player to a network leader in one year

It may have been a slow, long year for the telecom industry in India, but Reliance Jio, the latest entrant, will be able to claim the contrary: that in a very short span of time, it has travelled very far. Jio came, disrupted the market and now a year later, it still continues to do so with the recent launch of the JioPhone, a 4G feature phone for the masses.

Reliance Jio's journey started off back in December of 2015. Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani at the Jio introduction event broke the news that the company's Jio 4G network was finally up and running and that lucky employees (numbering over one-lakh plus) were the first customers to take India's first 4G all IP network for a test drive.
From speeds never seen before, to crystal clear voice calls, Jio employees got a taste of India's first truly 4G LTE network. Soon enough, Jio's confidence began to grow, with families of these employees on-boarded on to the beta-testing program. The company wanted to test out its network to fix possible glitches before a wider public roll out.
Later in January 2016, Reliance Jio began the roll out of its Wi-Fi service. The high-speed Wi-Fi services called Jionet. The service was launched by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on the occasion of Jio Amaravati Marathon. Back then, Jio's claims were pretty high. According to a PTI report, Reliance claimed that Jio 4G will deliver 10 times higher download speed and 4 times better upload speed compared to others.
Incumbent telcos began to feel the pinch of Jio's presence in the space, especially when Jio signed up with Reliance Communications to increase its spectrum footprint
Come March 2016, Jio's affordable and budget LYF branded 4G smartphones began to enter the market in preparation for the launch of its 4G services. Back then, the launch was expected to take place in the second half of 2016.
Sadly, the mid-year launch did not take place. Around May of 2016, Reliance announced a Jio referral program. The program allowed beta users to invite 10 friends to experience Jio services. However, there was a catch. While the referral program allowed plenty more users to access the Jio bouquet of services (JioPlay, JioBeats, JioMags, JioNews and so on), news users had to purchase a LYF smartphone to jump on to the same. Getting an invite was a big deal indeed, with invites sent being valid only for 15 days.
A month later, Jio.com went live with the Jio bouquet of apps (MyJio, JioChat, JioPlay, JioOnDemand, JioBeats, JioMags, JioXpressNews, JioDrive, JioJoin, JioMoney and JioSecurity) becoming available on both the App Store (iOS) and Google Play (Android). The services, however, were only accessible by the lucky few who had managed to get on the Jio network through the referral program.
With more and more users vying for a Jio connection, existing operators began to feel the pinch. Vodafone, for example, began slashing its data rates, followed by others in anticipation for the Jio launch.
Reliance soon began opening up the Jio Preview Offer to other devices with 4G bands as well. Beginning with Samsung and LG smartphones, Jio soon hauled in a long list of manufacturers to support its LTE network.

Reliance Jio tariff hiked: 84-day 4G plan now costs Rs459

Reliance Jio has also eased tariffs for some plans as subscribers of its Rs149 plan will get 4GB of data for each billing cycle under the new “Diwali Dhamaka” scheme

New Delhi: Reliance Jio customers will have to pay 15% more for its popular 84-day plan at Rs459 from Thursday, under which subscribers get 1GB 4G data per day, according to information published on the company’s website.
However, subscribers of its Rs149 plan will get 4GB of data for each billing cycle of 28 days under the new “Diwali Dhamaka” scheme compared to 2GB being offered at present.
Reliance Jio has also reduced the recharge tariff for lower denomination and short-term plans besides offering data benefits under the schemes. Reliance Jio has introduced a plan for Rs52 with one-week validity and for Rs98 with 2 weeks that will offer its customers free voice, SMS, unlimited data (0.15 GB daily), as per its website.
All plans of Reliance Jio will continue to offer unlimited voice calls even during roaming.
The Rs459 plan will offer Reliance Jio customers unlimited services at 1GB high speed data per day for 84 days for prepaid users followed by data at curtailed speed, along with unlimited voice calling and access to Reliance Jio apps.

The company has also reduced benefits under the Rs509 scheme, which offers 2GB of data per day, by reducing its validity or billing cycle from 56 days to 49. Accordingly, data at high speed gets reduced to 98 GB from 112 GB under previous scheme. Under this plan, data cost will be Rs5.2 per GB.
The Rs999 plan which offered 90 GB of 4G data without cut in download speed will now offer 60 GB at high speed data for 3 months.
Reliance Jio has introduced Rs1,999 plan which will have six months validity and offer 125 GB data at unrestricted high speed.
Under the new scheme, the validity of plan priced at Rs4,999 will be for a year instead of 210 days under the previous scheme. However, customers opting for it will get unrestricted access to 350 GB high speed data for the plan period compared to 380 GB offered earlier for same price

Unlimited Calls For Under Rs. 350 A Month? Latest Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Offers

Following Reliance Jio's disruptive entry last year, Airtel, Vodafone and Idea are launching new offers every day in a bid to retain their market position. Most of these plans have high speed data and free voice calls along with some which even offer free SMSes.  Here are some attractive recharge packs which will keep your monthly mobile bill under Rs. 350, without having to compromise on talk time. All the plans listed here offer unlimited talk time for at least 28 days with varying limits on 4G data.

Reliance Jio Rs. 149 plan

Under its recharge plan priced at Rs. 149, which is valid for 28 days, Jio offers high speed data of 4.2 GB data with a daily limit of 0.15 GB. The speed is reduced to 64 Kbps after the customer exhausts the daily limit. Local, STD and roaming calls are free and unlimited across all operators. The number of SMS is limited to 300.

Reliance Jio Rs. 309 recharge plan

This recharge pack by Jio comes with a validity of 49 days. It offers 1GB data per day. After usage of 1GB data per day, the speed is reduced to 64 Kbps. The maximum data that can be availed in this plan is 49 GB. Voice calls and SMS are unlimited.

Airtel Rs. 349 recharge pack

Airtel's Rs. 349 offer allows subscribers unlimited local, STD and roaming calls along with 1.5 GB data per day for a validity period of 28 days. Airtel's Rs. 349 recharge also comes with 100 free SMS per day for the validity period 28 days, according to Airtel's website - airtel.in.

Vodafone Rs. 348 prepaid recharge plan

Vodafone's recharge plan priced at Rs. 348 comes with 1 GB of 4G/3G speed data per day for a validity period of 28 days, among other benefits, according to its website - vodafone.in. The Rs. 348 recharge plan also offers unlimited local/STD calls made to mobile and landline connections.

Idea Rs. 349 prepaid recharge plan

Idea's Rs. 349 plan also gives the user unlimited talk time for 28 days. The Rs. 349 tariff plan also gives 1 GB of high speed data per day, which amounts to a provision of 28 GB across the validity of the offer.

Idea Rs. 357 prepaid recharge plan

Idea's Rs. 357 plan is similar to the Rs. 349 plan but gives 100 free SMSes daily along with unlimited calling and high speed data. The Rs. 357 plan gives a user the ability to send free SMSes for an additional cost of just Rs. 8.

As Jio continues its aggressive strategy of grabbing market share by underpricing rivals, mobile data and call rates have never been cheaper for customers.

Reliance Communications shares jump on debt revamp plan

Shares in Reliance Communications jumped as much as 16 per cent on Tuesday after the troubled Indian telecoms company announced a debt restructuring proposal that would dramatically shrink its business, while handing a majority equity stake to its creditors.
RCom, controlled by tycoon Anil Ambani, has been struggling to repay Rs457bn ($7bn) of debt amid a price war launched by new entrant Reliance Jio, run by Mr Ambani’s brother Mukesh.
On Monday night RCom said that, if lenders accepted its plan, Rs70bn of debt would be converted into 51 per cent of its equity. A further Rs170bn would be repaid with funds raised through the sale of spectrum, towers and related assets, with an additional Rs100bn to be repaid through real estate sales.
This would leave RCom with “sustainable and conservative” secured debts of Rs60bn, the company said.
But the asset sales will leave RCom with a far smaller consumer mobile business that will be entirely reliant on access to Jio’s network, secured through a 2015 agreement.

Punit Garg, RCom’s executive director, told the Financial Times that secured creditors had welcomed the plan at a meeting on Monday, calling it a rare instance of an Indian company making a debt proposal that did not involve a writedown for creditors.
The company aimed to repay additional unsecured debt of Rs50bn with further asset sales that were not specified in the announcement, Mr Garg added.
The shares rose as high as Rs18.30 on Tuesday, up from the previous close of Rs15.75 and indicating a market capitalisation of Rs45.3bn.
The new plan follows the breakdown of RCom’s plan to merge its core mobile business with rival Aircel, which had been delayed by creditors’ objections and a probe into a 2005 acquisition of Aircel by Malaysia’s Maxis Communications.
RCom on Tuesday outlined its hopes for its business services division, which includes an international cable network and has “predictable annuity revenues” in a less competitive market than India’s consumer telecoms sector.
Mr Garg said the consumer business would in future account for only 10-20 per cent of RCom’s revenue. At the end of November RCom will close its service running on the 2G network protocol, relied on by customers with less advanced handsets, who Mr Garg said accounted for about 80 per cent of its 71m customers.
RCom will also end its 3G services after “a few months”, he added, leaving it serving a far smaller number of high-end smartphone users through Jio’s physical infrastructure. The 2015 agreement between the companies, seen as evidence of a rapprochement between the Ambani brothers after a lengthy feud, allows Jio to use spectrum owned by RCom in exchange for giving access to its network.
Neil Shah, an analyst at Counterpoint Research, said RCom’s new model was unlikely to survive in the intensely competitive Indian consumer mobile market, with rivals openly courting its customers through promotional activities.
“They must be also planning an exit strategy in parallel,” he said, suggesting that Reliance Jio could be a possible buyer of RCom’s mobile business if approval could be secured from competition authorities.

Mukesh Ambani may disclose Jio's future plans at Reliance Industries' AGM on September 1
KOLKATA | MUMBAI: Reliance IndustriesBSE -2.00 % Chairman Mukesh Ambani is likely to disclose future plans for Reliance Jio Infocomm at the company's annual general meeting (AGM) on Thursday, which could include details about its much-awaited tariff plans.

A person familiar with the matter told ET that the company could reveal some of its tariff packages aimed at specific categories of users. These will be closely tracked by the industry which is anticipating a bruising rate war.  "This AGM should be a big one for Jio," the person said. Jio is also expected to shortly file its tariff plans with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) and these will be effective once the three-month free voice and data trial offer lapses.

The government has been nudging Jio to file its tariff plans which will mark a significant step towards the launch of commercial 4G operations of the telecom unit of Reliance Industries. Jio has blamed incumbent operators for not giving it adequate points of interconnection.

This has led to 65 per cent of the calls from Jio's network dropping, forcing it to delay its commercial rollout, the company claims.
India's top telcos in turn have accused Jio of running commercial operations in the guise of trials and violating rules, and said they wouldn't give more PoIs till Jio launches operations commercially.

Another person aware of company plans said Reliance wants to make Lyf among the top three smartphone brands in India. It plans to come up with special tariff plans for Lyf customers to make these handsets more attractive.

"While Reliance Jio has now opened up the preview  offer to almost all the leading smartphone brands which were earlier exclusive to Lyf customers, there will be some special tariff plan for Lyf customers to ensure the handset sales continue and drive volume sales," he said. Jio didn't respond to emailed requests for comment at press time.

There has been considerable speculation in the telecom industry about whether the company will announce a date for the launch of its commercial operations at the AGM. One of the persons quoted ear. earlier said the proposed launch date was a closely guarded secret, known only to Ambani and a handful of key executives.

Tips to use free internet from Reliance Jio in the best way

We can finally subscribe to Reliance Jio. It’s time to celebrate now that we have an awesome combination of high-speed internet and zero charges for making voice calls. The cherry on the cake is that there are also zero charges for Reliance Jio services until 31st December, 2016.
Let me repeat that once more: Once you get a subscription, you will get free unlimited internet for the next four months! Yay!
Before you lose yourself in the ocean of free internet from Reliance Jio, here are some tips that can save you from unpleasant surprises and embarrassment:

Clear your browsing history

Considering the sensitivity and personal nature of content accessed by a majority of users, it is advised that you always remember to clear your browsing history before closing the web browser. Keeping your history clean can help you avoid an embarrassing situation, like if someone gets their hands on your smartphone. Another alternative is to browse in private mode.

Set up a virtual private network (VPN)

When you connect to the internet through a VPN, your data is kept secure and encrypted, safe from hackers’ eyes. It allows you to browse the web in complete anonymity and also block ad trackers. You can download Opera VPN to enhance your online privacy and unblock your favorite content and apps from anywhere in the world.

Protect your device from malware

With the free unlimited data being offered by Reliance Jio, you’ll probably want to download loads of applications, but beware! These apps may contain malware. Malware can be downloaded unknowingly as it can be disguised as a game (e.g. a fake Pokemon Go app), security patch, utility, or other useful applications. Keep your security software up to date as an added precaution.
Grab your Aadhaar card and head over to the closest Reliance store to get your Jio SIM card. We hope these tips help you make the most out of their 4G services.

Reliance Jio Phones: List of VoLTE Mobiles That Will Work on the Jio Network

Reliance Jio services will be open to everyone from Monday, and you can get a SIM and enjoy free usage until December 31, until the plans kick in from next year. The entire Reliance Jio network runs on data, which means even voice calls are data-powered.
What this means for you is that you will need a VoLTE capable phone to make calls on the Jio network. You can still use 4G phones that support Jio's LTE band, but you will not be able to make calls unless your phone supports VoLTE. Reliance Jio is offering app-based workarounds to let you call any number on such cases, but to enjoy the true Jio experience, you need to have a VoLTE use to make the most of the network.

We have compiled a list of VoLTE capable phones. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list by any means, and it's definitely possible we may have missed some VoLTE-capable handsets that are available in the market. But, this should be a good starting point if you are looking for a new phone to use with a Reliance Jio SIM.
(Also seeHow to Get and Activate Reliance Jio SIM Card)
If you believe we've missed a VoLTE capable phone that's available in India, let us know via the comments and we will update our list. Apart from this list, do note that the entire rangle of Reliance Retail's Lyf-branded smartphones are VoLTE-enabled and ready to use on the Jio network.
You should also refer to Reliance Jio's own list of phones that support VoLTE.
Here are VoLTE-capable phones for the full Reliance Jio experience:

Note that this list is based on specifications listed by various companies - we've not tested compatibility of each phone with Reliance Jio network ourselves. You are advised to verify functionality of respective phones with Reliance Jio customer care before making a purchase, and check Jio's own list of VoLTE phones as well, though it doesn't look exhaustive by any means.
What other VoLTE-enabled phones are available in India? Let everyone know via the comments.

Jio set to launch its own VR app in 2018

LONDON: The new entrant in the telecom industry, Reliance Jio, is planning to launch its own Virtual Reality (VR) app in 2018 and is hoping to collaborate with experts at Birmingham City University in England, the university said.

Aiming to explore potential partnerships in the future, the Head and Creative Director of Jio Studios, Aditya Bhat and Ankit Sharma respectively, visited the university on Wednesday to learn more about how it is training the next generation of virtual reality (VR) professionals.

The Founder and Managing Director of philmCGI, Anand Bhanushali, also spent time with senior academics of the university as part of a visit organised by the UK's Department of International Trade.

Based out of both Mumbai and Pune, philmCGI is an animation studio where some 90 artists provide computer-generated images and visual effects services in films and television for some of the biggest studios in Europe and Asia, and is also expanding   its offer in VR and Augmented Reality (AR).

"Today we have discussed a number of opportunities for collaboration," said Bhanushali.

Jio announces triple cashback offer for Jio Prime members

MUMBAI: Reliance Jio has rolled out a slew of cashback offers and discount coupons for its prepaid subscribers in an aggressive move to retain and attract users, dampening hopes of an early return to pricing stability in the telecom industry.

After triggering a massive price war last year, the Mukesh Ambani-owned company had in October reduced the tenure of its popular Rs 399 prepaid plan from 84 days to 70 days. This had led analysts to hope that the blood-letting in the industry

But Reliance Jio struck again on Thursday. The company unveiled cashback offers on every recharge of Rs 399, which include eight vouchers of Rs 50 each that will be credited to the ‘MyJio’ digital wallet of all Jio Prime members. These vouchers can be used to get discounts of Rs 50 each on any subsequent recharge, or data topup, bringing down the effective tariff.

In addition, subscribers will get vouchers worth Rs 300 credited into Jio’s partner mobile wallets such as,  AmazonPay, AxisPay, FreeCharge, Mobikwik, Paytm and PhonePe

In addition, subscribers will get vouchers worth Rs 300 credited into Jio’s partner mobile wallets such as AmazonPay, AxisPay, FreeCharge, Mobikwik, Paytm and PhonePe.

Moreover, subscribers will get vouchers of up to Rs 1,899 for shopping on ecommerce platforms and for discounts on flight tickets on specific portals. The offers are valid from November 10 to November 25. Analysts and experts say these schemes are likely to compel Airtel, Idea Cellular and Vodafone India to respond. “ ..

“This is a discount and not a freebie but will again be a setback for the industry which will now try to catch up,” said an analyst at a global brokerage, who did not want to be named.

Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) director general Rajan Mathews said since this was a promotional offer limited to a class of people within its customer base, it didn’t violate Trai regulations and predicted that more such plans could be expected going forward as telcos seek to retain customers.

“Jio’s entry tariff plans had forced competition to match. Competition doesn’t always match, it does better. And then the new player goes one-up,” said Mathews. Shares of
Bharti Airtel closed at Rs 503.90, up 1.77 per cent , while those of Idea Cellular closed at Rs 96.65 a piece, down 1.88 per cent on the BSE on Thursday.

The new offers are also designed to protect Jio’s July-September monthly average revenue per user (ARPU) of . Rs 54.

“The company has to maintain its ARPU, retain Prime customers and keep cash coming in. These offers will help them achieve that,” said Sanjiv Bhasin, executive VP, markets and corporate affairs,  at brokerage IIFL. Prashant Singhal of EY said that the move was a good way to acquire more customers. “It also opens doors for more partnerships within the digital ecosystem, which can propel people to use data-rich services and e-payment platforms,” he added.

Jio’s cashback offers comes days after incumbents Airtel and Vodafone launched their own offers for their customers. Bharti Airtel launched . Rs 499 per month ‘Infinity’ plan with unlimited free outgoing calls on national roaming and unlimited local and STD calls, bundled with 20 GB 4G/3G data, while Vodafone launched a host of data rollover options among others for its subscribers on Tuesday.

Jio

Reliance Jio promises to shape the future of India by providing end-to-end digital solutions for businesses, institutions and households and seamlessly bridging the rural-urban divide.
Home to the world’s second largest population of 1.2 billion, India is a young nation with 63% of its population under the age of 35 years. It has a fast growing digital audience with 800 million mobile connections and over 200 million internet users. Reliance thoroughly believes in India’s potential to lead the world with its capabilities in innovation. Towards that end, Reliance envisages creation of a digital revolution in India.
Reliance Jio aims to enable this transformation by creating not just a cutting-edge voice and broadband network, but also a powerful ecosystem on which a range of rich digital services will be enabled – a unique green-field opportunity.
The three-pronged focus on broadband networks, affordable smartphones and the availability of rich content and applications has enabled Jio to create an integrated business strategy from the very beginning, and today, Jio is capable of offering a unique combination of telecom, high speed data, digital commerce, media and payment services.

A Vision That Touches All

Reliance’s vision for India is that broadband and digital services will no longer be a luxury item. Rather, Reliance envisions an India where these are basic necessities to be consumed in abundance by consumers and small businesses alike, as much in far-flung villages as in our largest cities. The initiatives are truly aligned with the Government of India's ‘Digital India’ vision for our nation.
Affordable Devices: Jio has worked with all the leading device manufacturers of the world to ensure availability of 4G LTE smartphones across all price points – from ultra-premium models on one hand, to entry level models on the other.
Digital Communication: The application Jio4GVoice brings the 4G communication suite to all smartphones. With its RCS (Rich Communication Services) features like Enriched calling, Chat, File share and Unified Messaging, it redefines the calling and messaging experience. It also enables Jio’s cutting edge voice and video call service on non-VoLTE smartphones.
Digital Currency: Jio envisions a new India which will use digital currency instead of paper money for a more secure and convenient way to transact. Jio Money, Jio’s digital currency and digital payments business, will play a crucial role in this by offering a platform for ubiquitous, affordable and secure digital payments.

Laying the Foundation for the Future

Reliance Jio is creating the most extensive and future-proof network in India, and perhaps, in the world. It will provide next generation legacy-free digital services over an end-to-end all-IP network, which can be seamlessly upgraded even to 5G and beyond. In addition to the existing pan India 2300 MHz spectrum and 1800 MHz in 14 circles, Jio invested over Rs 10,000 crore during this year's auction to acquire 800 MHz spectrum in 10 circles and 1800 MHz spectrum in 6 circles. This brings the cumulative investment in spectrum assets to nearly Rs 34,000 crores. Jio now has the largest footprint of liberalized spectrum in the country, acquired in an extremely cost effective manner.

Reliance Jio has laid more than 2.5 lakh kilometres of fibre-optic cables, covering 18,000 cities and over one lakh villages, with the aim of covering 100% of the nation’s population by 2018. It has an initial end-to-end capacity to serve in excess of 100 million wireless broadband and 20 million Fibre-to-Home customers. Reliance Jio has also built nearly half-a-million square feet of cloud data centres and a multi-Terabit capacity international network.
The infrastructure is being built in partnership with some of the world’s most technologically advanced companies.
